Baseball Science Fair Project Ideas
By Bubba Dresch, former Cincinatti Reds Player

So, the big science fair is coming up in a couple of weeks, right? Do you know what your project is going to be yet? Wait, are you serious? You’re really going to do that thing with the potato? C’mon, you can do better than that. How about taking your love for baseball and incorporating it into your science fair? There are plenty of cool ideas that are sure to leave an impression with your teachers and classmates. In this article, we’ll give you a few baseball science fair project ideas that will definitely hit a home run.

There’s no better moment in baseball than when a slugger gets a hold of a pitch and sends it sailing into the seats. But do you know what actually happens as the ball first comes into contact with the bat? Well, it is actually pretty interesting stuff, and would be a perfect demonstration to give at the science fair. For example, you’d probably be surprised to know that both the bat and ball actually undergo a slight change in shape due to velocity and physics. There are other factors in play here, but we can’t do your project for you, right?

Another great topic for your science fair involves different pitches thrown by a pitcher. A fastball is going to move in a totally different way than a curveball, and this is due in large part to the principle of aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is the study of forces and the resulting motion of any object through the air. This would be a very interesting topic to further check out for your science fair.

Lastly, you could investigate why a batted ball will sometimes travel more than 400 feet while at other times barely move 10 feet. This has to do with where the batter actually hits the ball along the bat. The ball will not go too far if hit near the end or near the hands. However, a baseball can really jump if hit in just the right “sweet spot’. Hmmm…wonder why that is…

These are just a few ideas that you can consider for your upcoming science fair. The game of baseball lends itself to scientific study in so many ways; it is now up to you to choose the area that seems the most interesting. Regardless of the topic you decide on, you have to admit one thing - it sure beats a potato! Good luck!
