A well-lined baseball field looks professional and helps umpires make accurate calls. Whether maintaining a youth league field or preparing a high school diamond, proper line painting is worth doing right.
Equipment
- Aerosol athletic field marking paint or bulk paint with line machine
- Wheeled line chalker or paint machine
- 300-foot and 25-foot measuring tapes
- Stakes and string for guide lines
- Batter box template
Foul Lines
Run from the back point of home plate to the outfield fence. Originate from the back corner, not the front. Stretch string from back point through outside edge of the base to the fence. Walk line machine slowly along the string. Standard width 2-4 inches.
Batter Box
Regulation: 4 feet wide by 6 feet long, centered on home plate. Front edge 4 inches ahead of plate center, back edge extends 3 feet behind. Use a template for speed and consistency. Lines 2 inches wide on lightly raked dirt.
Coach Boxes
In foul territory along first and third base lines. 20 feet long, 10 feet wide. Begin 15 feet from the back of the base.
Running Lane
3-foot-wide lane in foul territory along the first base line. Starts halfway between home and first, extends to first base. Two lines: foul line and a parallel line 3 feet into foul territory.
On-Deck Circles
5 feet diameter in foul territory. Center typically 37 feet from back point of home plate. Use a stake and 2.5-foot string to swing a consistent circle.
Tips
- Paint on dry surfaces to prevent bleeding.
- Consistent machine speed for even distribution.
- Paint before games for freshest lines.
- Store paint at room temperature.
- Set PVC pipes flush with ground at key points for quick re-lining.
